WhatsApp banned Over 7 Million Bad Accounts in India
Record accounts (7.2 M) banned in India in one month
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has announced that it has taken
down more than 7 million bad accounts in India as part of its compliance with
India's IT Rules 2021. In July alone, the popular instant messaging platform
banned over 7.2 million accounts in the country. With over 500 million users in
India, WhatsApp received a record-breaking 11,067 complaint reports in July,
resulting in the actioning of the aforementioned accounts. Surprisingly, around
3.1 million accounts were proactively banned even before receiving any reports
from users.
WhatsApp released its monthly compliance report, stating,
"This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received
and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own
preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform."
The term "Accounts Actioned" refers to cases where
WhatsApp took remedial action based on the reports received, while "taking
action" indicates either banning an account or restoring a previously
banned account.
During the same period, WhatsApp received five orders from
the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) and duly complied with all of them. The
GAC was recently established by the Indian government to address concerns
regarding content and other issues raised by social media users. This
initiative aims to strengthen the country's digital laws and allows users to
appeal against decisions made by social media platforms.
WhatsApp's efforts to remove bad accounts and engage with
the Grievance Appellate Committee highlights its commitment to providing a safe
user experience. As per the company, it remains dedicated to combating abuse
and maintaining the integrity of its platform in India and across the globe.
